Queen Mary Falls via the back roads - Sunday 13th February

Post by GridPack »

For our first trip of 2022 I'll lead a day trip from Ripley through to Queen Mary Falls via the back roads. We'll also drop in to the park at the base of Mt Barney on the track we followed to the private camping area that we stayed at a couple Christmas trips ago. There is a swimming hole with a waterfall that we didn't know about at the time about 100m upstream from where we crossed the creek. Worth a look to see if the waterfall is still running.
From there we will go around the bottom of Lake Maroon and via White Swamp, crossing the Qld/NSW border a couple times on the way to Queen Mary Falls for lunch. We can come back down Spring Creek Road.
There will be a fair bit of dirt road, and small creek crossings as well as steep narrow bitumen roads as well - however nothing that will require us to air down. I did the recce in 2WD - so a green rating.
The country is looking the greenest I've ever seen it.
The kiosk at the Falls is open but only serving takeaway - we can eat in the park. May be wise to bring a chair. Also bring a brolly and coat - it can be cold and unpredictable up there.
I'd suggest bringing a picnic type lunch in case the kiosk is busy.
Unfortunately the Condamine head waters track with all the water crossings is still closed due to flooding - but that wet weather has also made the falls quite spectacular. We can do one of the walking circuits if you like, before heading back down the range on the bitumen.
We could come back via a back road to Moogerah Dam if anyone is keen.

I have messages that Terry and also Keri are starters and Mark is a maybe. I'll confirm with Mark later today, but looks like we will have 5 or 6 vehicles along.
Should be a nice day out.
Don't forget a coat.
Cheers,
Don
