Queen Mary Falls, Sunday 13th Feb 2022

The 6 vehicles all met up at Forty West Café at South Ripley. Don led the group of Cos, Mark, Arie & Alice, Keri & Paul, Ben, Mariana & Indy, Terry & Alison off to find some dirt roads. It was a nice scenic drive with a few creek crossings that had gone down a lot since Don’s recce the week before and now only had trickles of water running across them.
Our first stop was at a Rathdowney park where Indy & Alice had fun in the playground. Alice was enjoying herself so much Mark had to bribe her with the promise of an ice cream at our next stop, Rathlogan Olive Grove, just down the road.

It was the busiest we’d seen it and there was just enough space for us all to park. It was at least a 40 minute wait if you wanted food from the kitchen and it sounded like they were close to running out of food as well. Luckily the wait for ice cream wasn’t long and some of us got to enjoy a scoop or two.

Our next stop was a nice little waterfall about a 5 minute walk from Waterfall Creek Reserve Campground. It was a great little spot that other people had found too and were enjoying a dip in the water hole. Indy and Alice found frog spawn in the water and Indy was brave and picked them up.

There were lots of dragonfly's at the waterfall as well.

As it was lunch time and the campground was a good spot to eat we had a leisurely lunch before starting the hour drive to Queen Mary Falls via Lake Maroon. This section of the drive was particularly green.

At Queen Mary Falls we first walked to the cliff view point of the falls and got to see it in full flow. Here we said goodbye to Mark, Arie & Alice who were pressed for time and had to get back. The rest of us did the 40 minute walk down to the bottom of the waterfall where everyone got a bit damp from all the spray.

Keri & Paul left for home from Queen Mary Falls while the rest of us headed to Lake Moogerah for one last stop before home. The Lake was very full with the water only being a couple of metres below the spill way. A small amount of water was being released. That may explain the awful sulphur smell at the dam. Indy was excited at seeing lots of turtles below us in the water, they looked like they were waiting to be fed.

Thanks to Don for organising the last minute trip. It was good to get out for a long drive, it had been a while.

Great report Cos - and amazing pics as usual.
It was great to see a good turn up for the first trip this year, I think we were all keen just to get out and have a drive and catch up. I'll throw in a few extra pics of the day that I took.
Firstly the "almost frog" tadpoles that Indy bravely showed everyone.

While I intended to stop for lunch at Queen Mary Falls, the Waterfall Creek Reserve campground seemed even nicer (and quieter) and I'd have been quite happy chilling all day under those trees.

While most of the creeks had dropped, the Falls still put on a good show.

Cos gets up close in the spray for his quality photos. I enjoy standing back and snapping the snapper.

Thanks to Keri for trotting out the blue marshmallow cake after our walk around the falls.
