Bribie Island Sunday 23rd April 2023

Post by GridPack »

It had been 2 years since we last did a club trip up to Bribie Island, so Sunday afternoon saw the FJ Cruiser sub-section of the club (Ben Mariana, Rumy and Indy, and Don, Tracey and Chelsea) head over to Woorim to air down. The Inland track was still listed as closed, so this trip was to be a run up the beach to the forts. The access to the beach at Woorim was as chopped up as ever, and a couple of vehicles coming off the beach were in the process of recovery, but we had no problems getting through.
We stopped in at the second Lagoon on the way up the beach for the kids to stretch their legs. The lagoon was definitely not as crowded as we remembered from last trip.

We headed up the beach and the wind seemed to get stronger and stronger as we headed up to the north end. The sand was at times whipping across the beach. I’m still not sure whether the north end is less protected than the south or whether it was just the time of day, because when we returned to the Southern end later, the wind was a gentle breeze.

The turn around point for vehicles is now on the southern side of the forts. We were expecting to see more damage at the forts due to the weather events earlier in the year, but aside from a bit more erosion around the footings, they seemed much like they did in previous trips. The wind was pretty strong, so we didn’t stay long.

We headed back down to the third lagoon (or was it the second?) and while a bit cool, the sight of crabs in the lagoon discouraged the kids from going for a swim. We were however treated to a double rainbow.

I’m sure our club photographers would have appreciated the golden sunset glow.

We decided that instead of the beach sausage sizzle, we’d get out of the wind and headed to Ben and Mariana’s holiday house at Woorim for a BBQ in comfort under cover in their backyard. We left the beach just as it was getting dark.
A big thank you to Ben and Mariana - not just for organising the trip, but also hosting the BBQ.
A very pleasant afternoon and evening!

Great trip report Don. It certainly did get windy up the northern end of the island and e made a great decision to get off the beach for dinner. I have no photos to add as i didn't take any but i will see if i can get Mariana to add some. The water temp at Bribie has dropped dramatically over the last week to 20 C, even Indy pulled the pin because it was too cold. We can have another trip towards the end of the year, hopefully the middle track will be open by that stage.
Cheers Ben and Mariana and Indiana
