North Straddie Sat 11th March

Post by CBM_64 »

G'day members,

I'm looking at leading my first trip for the club next month. It will either be a day or two day trip to North Stradbroke Island on Saturday 11th March.

For the day trip I'd look at catching the 7am Big Red Cat ferry for $49.50 (any later ferries and the price goes up to $85) from Cleveland to Dunwich. As I've never been to Straddie before I've just copied one of Dave's old itineraries which is;

Drive through centre of the island (on bitumen) and then take the 4x4 track north to Point Lookout where we could have morning tea and go for a walk around North Gorge and maybe some dolphin spotting. Then we can drive down the eastern beach to the southern tip and have lunch. After lunch we head back to the ferry stopping at Brown Lake on the way.

We would need to catch the 3pm Minjerribah ferry back to Cleveland to get the low price of $49.50 (the price goes up to $65 after 3pm).

As I said I've never been to Straddie before so I'm open to suggestions if someone wants to see something different.

For a 2 day trip it becomes more expensive! I'd catch the same ferry over but there are no cheap deals returning to Cleveland on the Sunday. The price is $85 all through the day until 6pm when the price drops to $75. Plus you have factor in accommodation overnight, whether that is camping or cabin etc. Camping at Adder & Cylinder camp grounds is $32 & $42 receptively for 2 people on an unpowered site.

We also have to pay for a 4wd permit that costs $42.63. I think this might last a year?

Because of the extra costs and I don't have a planned itinerary for a second day I'm inclined towards making it a day trip but if people are willing to stay overnight and have an idea of what to do on the Sunday I'm happy to make it a 2 day trip.

So let me know if you're interested and whether you would prefer one or two days. We probably don't want to wait too long to decide as I think the cheap ferries sell out.

Cheers,

Cos.

Hi Cos,

I know my tribe would certainly be keen to go. We even have a Straddie beach permit that expires ...... 28th of Feb 17. Darn. We have to renew that one again.

We will keep our fingers crossed for good weather.

Thanks
Dave.

Hi everyone,

I have decided to make the trip to North Straddie a day trip. Here are the details;

Trip Leader: Cos

Where: North Stradbroke Island

Costs: $89 for return ferry 7am departure on Big Red Cat from Cleveland & 3pm departure on Minjerribah from Dunwich (costs will increase on later ferries). You can purchase tickets from https://bookonline.stradbrokeferries.co ... rchJourney

A vehicle permit is also required and costs $43.75 and can be bought online at http://www.straddiecamping.com.au/4wd

Standard : Easy to Moderate

Meeting Location: BP Service Station, Gordon St, 3, Cleveland QLD 4163 https://www.google.com.au/maps/place/BP ... 53.2584472

Meeting Time: 6:20am. We need to be at the ferry for 6:40am, 20 minutes before departure and it is a 5 minute drive from the BP servo to the ferry.

UHF: Channel 13.

I have already booked my ferry tickets in case the ferry sells out. I hope you can join me.

Cheers,

Cos.

Hi Cos,

I am interested in coming. Just a heads up, the keyholes track has been closed since Jan last year (I recall reading about it in the local paper at the time - https://www.google.com.au/webhp?sourcei ... oke+island).

Be glad to have you along Mark. Cheers for the info, I think Dave mentioned something about it being closed at the last meeting. I'd never heard of it until then so I won't miss it. As I said I haven't been before so if there is somewhere you want to go on the island just let me know.

Hi Cos,

We were thinking of catching the 6pm Big Red Cat ferry from Dunwich. This will allow the kids to have a swim late in the afternoon at Cylinder beach.

Cheers
Dave.

I'm booked on same ferry as Cos - both ways.
With luck I'll have enough daylight to wash down after getting home.

I am booked on the 7 and 3pm ferries as well. I reckon I should just make it home before dark to clean up too Don :D

Are we ordering our permits before we go or getting them on the day?

If you buy the permit online and still have to pick it up on the island I guess we may as well buy them on the day. That way the permit will expire an extra day or two later. Dave's has just expired so he'd know if it would save us anytime buying before we go.
