Re: Capella_Ben's 80
Not that it's much help but I have seen this before with a dual battery setup. I was stumped at the time and never figured it out, my theory at the time was exactly like Dave said - operating at just below the fuse's capacity for long periods of time.
Never quite believed that though as it seemed to go quite quickly just like you observed. In any event in that case the deforming of the plastic holder ended up pushing the fuse out thus breaking the circuit so I never did know if there was something bogus with the fuse.

Re: Capella_Ben's 80
The compressor is rated at 28A. The Fuse is 40A, but I'm sure that those fuse holders are rated to only 30A (god only knows why they make 40A blade fuses as no holders I have seen are rated that high). The cable does get a bit hot under normal use. Well the whole thing gets pretty hot!
Anyway off to Jaycar to get a proper 5AG 40A fuse and holder.

Re: Capella_Ben's 80
this has happened to me multiple times. not my air comp tho, but my thermo fans. Its drawing too much for the cables and fuse holder to handle, but the fuse is still operating fine. Ive fixed this issue tho.
options are...
1. thicker cable and fuse holder
2. make your own fuse holder. 2 female terminals is all you need
3. Get a patrol
4. thank tim

I have replaced the fuse holder, no problems.
I measured the resistance in the old fuse. It ended up being around 2K ohms. I guess that explains why it melted. New fuse is basically 0 ohms.
Job's a good 'un!

Re: Capella_Ben's 80
Back when we were last at Janowen, I might have ever so lightly kissed a rock with my front diff. And when I say kiss, I mean dislodge. And when I say lightly I mean brutally thump. The end result was the Landcruiser won and the rock lost, but it did do a tiny bit of damage to the protective ring around the diff drain plug. And when I say a tiny bit of damage I mean it bent it right over against the plug so that I could not undo it at all.
So I bashed and cut it away from the drain plug so I could then remove the plug.

but after this the front of the ring was too low and wasn't protecting properly.
So I bought a couple of protective rings from superior engineering and now it look like this.

All ready for the next trip.

Re: Capella_Ben's 80
Last trip I forgot the mast for my UHF. That should never happen again now.
I designed and printed a holder for it that goes on the tailgate. It took several design iterations to get it right. The way it works is you screw the base in and clip in the top.
I mounted it on wood as a final test. I wanted to be sure of the mounting before I drilled holes in the trim.

Here it is finished.

A while ago I replaced the rocker cover gasket to stop a bit of a oil weep.

I used some Hylomar as well. Seems to have done the trick.

Driving on the highway we drove over a piece of wood. Well that's what I thought, then things didn't feel right. After diving over to the emergency stopping lane I noticed that something was missing.

Turn out the idler pully for the air con fell off; the bolt snapped. Yes the only non-Toyota part on the engine failed.

Guess where the pulley went when it fell off....

and it ended up doing this...

needless to say the radiator wasn't quite able to hold its water.
Here is the culprit, the pulley itself is somewhere on the side of the road.

and what's left of the fan

Now to get some parts and get it all back together.
