Hi there,

I'm contemplating getting a used hilux for offroad use and hopefully a trip to the Cape in a few years time.

What should I be looking out for when inspecting the vehicle and where do you take yours for servicing?

The vehicle I'm interested in is a 1997 LN106R 2.8L diesel with 201,000km. It has an alloy tray with hardtop canopy. Also comes with a fuel filter and dual battery but no air condition. The seller wants 12,500k for it. I've done some research on car sales and the asking price is 3k more than the suggested valuations. I believe the low ks and extras are enough to justify the 3k premium.

I'm seeking opinions on the longevity and reliability of the motor. How many more ks before a major overhaul or rebuilt is necessary on the motor? What is average fuel economy on this vehicle?

Thanks

I don't know anything about diesels. Car has pretty low Ks. Mine is a 1997 and it has just ticked over 300,000.

You can get a lot of opinions from the 4wd action forum as well,

But Dipmaker will probably have some useful advice.

My pick between the petrol and diesel hilux would be the diesel only because of its reliability in harsh environments such as water crossings etc and the convenience of large amounts of torque.
My fuel economy used to be 10 L per 100km but now the motor has over 300k on it I am down to 11-12L per 100km and even though it still starts and runs very smooth it struggles on the hills.
The savings in fuel are probably more than offset by the maintenance costs of oil and filter changes every 5k leaving not much change of $100 for parts and oil.
I do 99% of the work on the vehicle myself as I have had some VERY disappointing results from so called "experts" in the past.

Well, I may have drop by your place for a lesson on how to service the hilux. I'm still deciding on whether to get it and will keep you posted.

To be honest Kelvin scourer the forum sites to see where everyone is taking theirs. I know of a mechanic around Marooka (spelling) that has abit of a following, but not being from the Northside I have know idea.
To me 200,000 does not sound much for a Diesel but that means Jack if the guy cannot proove he has had it serviced and what Steve said, If your not willing to do the basic oil changes yourself you are going to throw money out the window. Actually you could pay me and I'll do your basic oil changes.

Well kelvin the basic oil change for my diesel usually costs a few hundred but thast only becuse i i buy bulk to save for next time.

Im not sure on hiluxs but to me a good diesel will go for ever if serviced correctly and maintained well. Insaying that i know of a guy who sold his petrol patrol many years ago with over 450,00klms on it and still goin strong, so basically if you look after any car it will last forever.
