I am currently doing homework on what type of tyres for my Kimberley trip next year. I envisage there will be quite a bit of sharp rock type roads. Anybody had personal experience good or bad with tyres under these conditions? And also do the camper trailer tyres need to be as good as the vehicles? All suggestions will be welcomed.

If your heading out into this kind of country then you would best be getting a tyre with a thick side wall or something along the lines of maybe say a 6ply rating or higher.
Although you may not be able to get them in say a 33 or similar but im sure you would be able to get them in your size Steve.
I know when i did the cape trip i used the old style goodyear wrangler mtr and had no issues with it apart from a blown tyre which was caused a split in the sidewall which happened and had been repaired in brisbane before we left.
I havent had any expereince with mickey thompson mtz but i have heard alot of good feed back about them used on shalley ground and held up well.

You definitely need good quality tyres on the trailer for a trip like that. It is obviously best if you can use the same tyres as the hilux. Not sure if it is the same stud pattern though, that would be ideal. In an emergency you could interchange the tyres. Hey you could go old school and go split rims

I've heard good reports of the wranglers, have they changed lately? are they still as good as the old ones?

The split rims with crossplys have crossed my mind and I'm pretty sure the trailer wheels fit the hilux, they do fit the old lux.

The good year wranglers are supposed to be better now that they have a kevlar compound in them but since there still relatively new on the scene im still waiting to see how they perform.
But i do know the old pattern worked well and if you plan on going up a size for the trip stay around 33s as any bigger than that is almost imppossible to find.
Whe i did the cape i took 1 spare, plus 1 spare casing plus 1 spare inner tube and had used to spare once and also had to use the inner tube to get me back home.
