Bellthorpe National Park - 9th Nov 2013

Post by Dave »

It was a nice sunny morning as most of the group met at the Morayfield BP. People coming along to this trip were :
- Mark and Arie (Cubiod)
- David & Debbie (Puma)
- Alan (Boxy)
- David and his 3 boys, (Dave)
- Tom and Jules, and 1 daughter (Neuvotech)

From the BP, we headed out to Sandy Creek day use area where we met up with Neuvotech. At this time it was pointed out that 1 vehicle didn't quite blend in with the others ...... it was the red one as all the others were white. :eh: Ok - it could also have been the Toyota Prado as all the other vehicles were Nissan Patrols. :lolno:
As we hit the tracks, it wasn't too long before we aired-down to make a ride a lot smoother. The tracks were dry, and in relatively good condition.

After having some fun driving around various tracks, we thought it would be good to stop at the old saw mill for lunch, and to take a photo of the Patrols (and the Toyota recovery vehicle  )

After lunch, it was time test out a few more tracks. We eventually found a track that had a steep descent, and was badly rutted. Though completely dry now, the ruts were deep and without underbody protection, there was a chance of vehicle damage. So we turned around and went back up the track.

By mid afternoon, Tom and Jules' daughter had enough 4 wheel driving, so they headed home. The rest went on to try a couple more tracks. But Tom and Jules didn't get a chance to try their chainsaw.

After a while, we found ourselves on the loop that had some steep descents, and good hill climbs. Mark and I had good memories of this track. At the two third point, Mark found a smallish tree across the road. Thankfully Puma had his small folding saw, and it wasn't too long before we were on the road again.

Minutes later on another steep descent, Mark found another tree across the road. But this time is was a little bigger ... well, a lot bigger.
Image

After evaluating various options, including backtracking, we decided to have an attempt to cut through the log with a small folding saw.
Image

After around 15 to 20 minutes, the "fresh" log was cut, and the vehicles carefully manoeuvred around the tree. It was a massive tree.

Then it was one more steep climb up another ridge, before finishing the loop and airing-up near the main dirt home, and then heading home.
There was no vehicle damage on this trip. It was a great day out, and still my favourite National Park, and is only just over an hour from Brisbane.. There were still many tracks to explore, so a return trip will have to be planning in 2014.

A few more photos

The first track was called
Image

And it lived up to its name with several stops to remove sticks
Image

A nice little decent and creek crossing on this track
Image

A few shady trees and a nice breeze for lunch
Image

Just to get an idea of the slope, you can see Puma slipping on the way down to check it out
Image

And this was the section just prior to the main drop (perhaps we should put this one up as a caption competition)
Image

Winding our way through some nice country side
Image

And the triumphant trees loppers
Image

And finally a bit of tight cornering to get around the obstacle before hitting the last hill for the day

It was an awesome day, we enjoyed it very much, would love to do that again, and again, we will bring a bigger saw next time as we all probably will. Great company, it was a very pleasant fun day.
cheers Debbie and Dave
