Christmas Party 24th & 25th November

Post by Dave »

It was a sunny, though somewhat cool, morning at Boonah when most of the members met up at the BP. Well, people probably met up outside the local coffee shop.

We made our way to the Mt Barney retreat via a somewhat scenic road. It was long before we arrived, and confirmed we had the entire area reserved for the Breakaway Offroad 4x4 group.
Image

After setting up tents (and Dave and tribe rolling out sleeping bags in the cabin), we set off to explore some of the tracks in the area. The tracks seemed well graded and in good condition. As we continued, it was obvious that the tracks was not used too often. By the time we realised that sections were potentially "scratchy", we couldn't turn around due to the steepest of the tracks.

So we were committed to continue going forward, including Ben and Marina in their new 4x4. But the overgrown was generally reasonably soft.

After exploring a few more tracks, we returned to the camp site to test out the Zip-line. Cos was the first volunteer to test the safety ….. and it seemed to get a pass.

After a more test volunteers, it wasn't long before a bunch of kids were shouting "can I have a turn too?".

The sun was setting, and a few people started heading off to the local outlook. It was certainly very scenic.

As daylight departed, the firepit was put to good use, and Mark and Arie focused on getting the perfect temperature in the pizza oven.
Image

There were some very creative pizzas being made, and were consumed quickly after cooking in the wood-fired pizza oven.
Image

Don then went far beyond any expectations by presenting some awards spanning 6 different categories. Don even had a small video projector handy to display the presentation.
Image

Awards were handed out to some very deserving people. Though I think Don should have had one more category …. best presentation ever organised by a 4x4 member.

The AGM was then held, and finished reasonably promptly, especially since the generator was about to run out of petrol. Congratulations to the 2018/19 volunteers.
Soon after the meeting was completed, lights went out, and people moved over to the bush TV, i.e. the firepit.

The next morning was a very lazy pack-up, and most people were happy to just head back out the main track. We stopped for quick walk to a waterhole, before heading home. Though some people had time to test out the local coffee shop before the drive home.

It was a very relaxing weekend, and probably the best AGM ever organised.

Cheers

Thanks for doing the trip report Dave. It was great to catch up with everyone again after such a long hiatus. I was a bit surprised to be taking the Cruiser out on some tracks but boy am I happy with how it performed. I wish we could have hung around a bit longer but really needed to get out of the park before it got dark. Mariana and Indy had fun too. I need to reread the post about posting pictures again.
Cheers Ben and Mariana and Indiana

Thanks very much to everyone who attended and made it a great weekend. A special shout out goes to Don for his excellent presentation and award ceremony.

I have plenty of room in the trophy cabinet for next years ceremony.

Thanks to all for a nice weekend. Nice to meet individuals and families for the first time and catch up with those already met. Thanks for making me welcome. Big dance fest coming up for Em over Christmas/New Years. If anyone is into ballet, Em performs in Sleeping Beauty from Jan 16 to Jan 19 at The Playhouse, QPAC. Cos, fingers crossed that your next trophies don't come from a trip to the panel shop. Looks like this year's trophies have pride of place. Thanks again.

Definately an outstanding spot for our Christmas trip and AGM - well found Cos.
Great report as usual Dave, setting the standard that will take some beating for next years awards. Same with Cos' pictures. I think the judge had it right!
It was a pleasure having you involved Tim - you and the Hilux feel like part of the furniture already. I hope the mudflat reattached ok - that must put you in the running for upgrade opportunity for next awards night. But everyone has 12 months to better it.
And nice to see all the crew - including Ben, Mariana and little Indy back in a shiny FJ Cruiser after their stint in Melbourne.
I've attached a few happy snaps below.

Mt Barney...I think.
