Swan Gully 4WD Park 6 Oct

Post by GridPack »

It was before the 9am starting time when the full quorum met at Jubilee Park at Beaudesert. Mark (leader), and Don were driving solo and Tim had daughter Emmian along for company. Swan Gully 4wd Park is only 15 minutes or so south west of Beaudesert so we were very shortly signed in and exploring tracks.

The tracks were very dry and while some of the early tracks we tried were rated Medium to Hard we didn't encounter any particular difficulties - though a bit of moisture on these tracks would have made that a very different story. The tracks took us to some quite high scenic spots.

It soon became apparent that the ratings on some of the tracks were well out of date and erosion had certainly played a part over time. We were struggling up a particularly loose rocky, and rutted section when a very nicely set up comp vehicle approached from the other direction and the driver commented that they had a few hairy moments up the track we were headed. This track had already ripped off one of Tim's mudflaps so we decided we'd turn around and try some of the other tracks on the other side of the creek.

The countryside was suffering from the drought and even the lantana was looking sick. We stopped for lunch in the breeze at the top of one of the hills.

We hadn't gone far after lunch when we found a very interesting downhill section that once started we were sorta committed - back up was out of the question. When Tim started showing how the Hilux could wave it's back wheel about in the air, Emmi decided to vacate the front seat and walk. We managed to get a bit of exercise road building and had to remove Tims awning so he could get around a tree on a deeply rutted corner. We got down safely though a couple of sidesteps will need a bit of bending back into shape.

A great day out with a bit of exercise thrown in! Thanks to Mark for leading the trip.

Thanks for the great trip report Don. A wash of the car showed I’d just shaved the tree and taken a fine strip of paint off the canopy. A great outcome considering how reluctant the car was to go around the tree without some significant paint and panel mods. Thanks to you and Mark for your road building skills. It will be interesting to see if Emmi is keen to come again!
