Scenic Rim 4wd Park 05 th 2012

Post by Cheesemaker »

The morning started early for myself, there many Pros and Cons of having a second set of tyres and having to changeover when wanting to go bush is certainly a con.

Car packed, daughter packed, we headed off towards Beaudesert to both fuel up so Caltex and McDonalds got our business. This is where we met up with a group of avid 4wdrivers ready and willing to test their skills against all unknown obstacles that lay unknown before them at Scenic Rim 4wd Park, just out of Beaudesert and to top it off we were the last to arrive so we were given the honour of starting off the Trip Report.

We had a good number turn up for the day being:

David and his daughter Sam and future son in law
Ben and Jane and their tribe
8OXY
Brian and his better half Joan
Mark and his better half Arie
Jonathon and his better half Vicky and their friends from Sydney, Daniel and his better half
A tag along, Toowoomba Tim
Myself and my possessed daughter Anita

Scenic Rim may have had anywhere up to 200mm of rain in the past couple of weeks, but being a park in the hills the run off is substantial so it wasn’t to bad, yes a little mud here and there in lower spots but generally the tracks were dry.
The group ventured along a number of tracks throughout the morning with relative ease a couple of spots had some of the utes looking for extra traction and assistance.
There was one recovery situation that stood out when one of the members found himself on the soft side of a track and going know where. Guess what it wasn’t me.
A quick winch from a fellow member soon had him out of there, unfortunately the hungry winch decided to eat the cable dampener blanket as well this held us up some what, as they went through the process of trying to recover the blanket out of the winch.
End result it looked like the blanket had been hit by a shotgun (whoops.)

The day was very hot the humidity was high so it was pretty muggy, we found some shady trees and had a light picnic styled lunch enough to recharge the batteries before hitting the tracks once again.
Some tracks proved to be non Ute and Standard vehicle friendly which if we had continued to followed them more time consuming advanced techniques and recoveries would have to be adapted along with the risk of possible panel and under carriage damage would be inevitable so biting the bullet we turned around and found other tracks to suit.

A good day overall and I think everybody learnt something out of it adding to their own experience.

A good day was had by all.

To follow on from Tim's report above, Dave and I got to the top of Lyana's hill (spelling). At the top there is a pretty good lookout.

Once you get up the initial climb the going is pretty easy, it's just he first bit that's the challenge. It's a great hill to come up, but a doozy to go down!

Oh and I forgot to mention that at one stage I was leading everyone down a hill and came across an abandoned handheld UHF. Now it had mud and all manner of dirt on it and it obviously had been rained on.

I threw it in the car. Jane had a go at it and it actually worked. So now I'm up one handheld UHF!

One of the benefits of being a trip leader!
