Roll-overs, can you tell me what went wrong?

Post by Capella_Ben »

I like looking at roll-overs, just so I can learn from others mistakes. Roll-overs are something we all need to be careful about for obvious reasons.

Have a look at these three and tell me what went wrong.

Nothing against Jeeps, but Americans seem to roll-over more often.

I can't say that I have an expert opinion but I wouldn't mind hearing other people's thoughts so I'll contribute what I think.

I would say in #3 that you shouldn't be turning sideways when going up a rock step in the first place. The fact that they were then guided to a spot where the front right tyre was going up on a rock and the front left tyre was going to a hole was the final straw.

#2 seems to be too much throttle causing the wheel spin and subsequent bouncing on the rocks. The driver's response to then try and get forward movement by turning the front wheels and keeping the throttle on don't seem to help either.

#1 I'm actually not too sure myself as I can see the need for more throttle in the mud but perhaps too much again?

Like I said I could have this wrong, but the best way to get better is to be proved wrong right... :eh:

I'm no expert either. :shh:

I agree with you on #3. I don't know what she was doing guiding them up that slope on that angle. I reckon that the driver was not too keen on it and that is why he/she hesitated a lot. If you are that worried you should get out and have a look yourself. There were also a lot of people watching that didn't do anything.

On #2 He had a bit of throttle, but I don't think it was too much. Notice how the car was very bouncy. Maybe the shocks were too soft, but the car was very unstable. If it didn't have so much bounce it may have been alright. It's wheelbase also contributed. With a shorter wheelbase the change in lateral angle is emphasized.

#1 is an interesting one. In hindsight that much throttle was not necessary as it was not that boggy. It would be interesting to know if that was the first car through. Too much throttle for too long and he under-steered right off. There is a good possibility that he may have had a front locker and had it engaged, that would explain the under-steer.

Anyone else want to have a go?
